Storytelling is a fundamental mode of human communication used to share experiences and transmit values. Jesus effectively used narrative to make his teachings memorable. Aligned with the Religious Education Directory for Catholic Schools, effective Religious Education necessitates exploring God’s mystery and Jesus Christ’s life and teachings through Scripture and tradition. The Directory highlights storytelling’s capacity to engage pupils with the Gospel.  

“Jesus the Storyteller” is a resource designed to enhance Scripture pedagogy, providing an approach rooted in the Directory’s principles. It facilitates encounters with God’s relationship with humanity, enabling students to make connections with their lives.  

“Jesus the Storyteller” supports the Directory’s emphasis on using Scripture as a primary source, understanding literary forms, appreciating context, and exploring the dimensions of biblical narratives.  

The resource offers seven pedagogical approaches:

  • Jesus the Picture Painter: Engages students’ senses through vivid imagery.  
  • Jesus the Contextualizer: Supports understanding historical and cultural contexts.  
  • Jesus the Location Scout: Connects Bible stories with students’ lives.  
  • Jesus the Empathizer: Facilitates exploring emotional dimensions.  
  • Jesus the Prop Master: Promotes using visual aids.  
  • Jesus the Character Crafter: Deepens understanding of characters.  
  • Jesus the Joker: Explores humor as a means of engagement.
